Lucy found her forever family!

Lucy went to her forever home today with a very attentive new dad and a k9 brother. She is excited to start her new life with her new family! Her foster mom and dad and doggy siblings will miss her dearly but we wish her a long, healthy life! YAY Lucy!

Lucy takes a dip!

Come on in! The water's fine! Lucy beat the heat at the adoption event this weekend by lounging in a kiddie pool. Nothing like a little aqua therapy to strengthen her new knee. She put in a special request to go home with an adopter who has a pool or would like to take her to the beach in summer (but she'll be happy with any adopter who lets her play with the hose or a kiddie pool.) Lucy is a waterbaby!

Lucy's final checkup...

Success! Lucy went to the vet today for her 8 week post surgical followup appointment. Lucy had xrays taken to make sure her knee has healed properly and a final session with her physical therapist. Lucy got a clean bill of health! She is 100% able to resume normal doggy activities including chasing squirrels, wrestling with other dogs, running up and down stairs, and chasing her tail! Yay, Lucy! Now she just needs to find a family and she's set!

Lucy's first adoption event...

Lucy attended her first adoption event today. She enjoyed getting out of the house for some social time. Lucy beat the heat by dancing in the water bowl. Everyone around her got splashed, a welcome relief in the heat!

Lucy's back out on the road...

Since the weather was finally a little cooler today, Lucy took a nice long walk today to stretch out her new and improved ligaments. When she first arrived, she pulled quite a lot on the leash. She is such a quick learner that her leash manners are now near perfect. (Well, almost perfect; she found it difficult to contain herself when she saw a momma bunny and her 3 little babies. Maybe she just wanted to sniff and say hi, but we weren't taking any chances.) She's also working on her fear of passing cars. They are pretty big and scary!

Lucy had a bath today

Lucy is smelling pretty and looking fluffy! She had her first bath today since before her surgery and in this heat it was much needed! Lucy was a very tolerant girl. She stood still and enjoyed the cool water on this hot day!

Lucy's Two Week Post-op Check-up

Lucy went last Thursday for a check-up and to have her stitches removed. She got an A+ from the physical therapist for good range of motion and weight bearing on her healing leg. She has managed to chew a little bit at her stitches despite being stuck in the dreaded "cone of shame" for two whole weeks. She had to take antibiotics for another week to make sure the incision heals properly. Lucy is in great spirits and she is ready to get out there and run on her new leg!

Meet our girl Lucy!

Lucy was surrendered to a Humane Society when her owner lost his job and could no longer afford her. She is on a special diet and this made it harder to fulfill her needs on his reduced income. She was miserable at the shelter, turning circles in her pen and barking.

A wonderful foster family took her into their home when her time at the shelter was up and she settled in nicely with their other dogs (eight of them!) but they soon noticed that she limped on one of her hind legs. After seeing a specialist in Newport News, it was determined that Lucy should have surgery on her leg. Although elective, it was very likely that if this wasn’t repaired, it would cause the other hind leg to develop the same problem. The humane society did not have the money (between $1800-$3000) to fund the surgery. Lucky Dog stepped in and offered to raise the necessary funds for surgery (along with generous contributions from her foster family). Lucy had the operation on May 19th and has been resting and recovering ever since.

She is now looking for her forever home as well as some fundraising assistance to help cover her medical bills. Can you help?

Her previous foster tells us that Lucy was in dog-heaven at their house. She was on 11 acres on the water and she loves to swim, chase ducks, and play with some of the more energetic dogs. She started out sleeping in their bedroom but after a few days was comfortable lounging on the Karunda beds with the other dogs. She loved the basket of dog toys. She loved riding in the car. She loved watching American Idol. And, needless to say, she loved her foster parents and they loved her back. She is a wonderful, affectionate and intelligent dog who deserves a second chance.
